Wireless charging of Electric Vehicle

Our common sense is that electric vehicles can run and be charged by wired AC EV chargers. Wireless concept for EV charging is not a new concept, but also a challenge in EV industry. In this article, we will explore more for this technology. 

How does it work?

Imagine the charging system to be similar to that of a wireless phone charger.

The electric vehicle has a wireless receiver placed on the bottom of the car which must coincide with the charge coil positioned beneath the road’s surface for the power to be transferred to the EV.

Wireless charging for EVs works the same way, with a magnetic coil in the charger that sends current to a magnetic coil on the car’s underside. When the two pads align, charging begins.

Working Principle of Wireless EV Charging.

There are two wireless charging methods used more frequently in electric vehicles which are electromagnetic induction and magnetic resonance. The former needs to install power supply coils at the bottom of cars and the ground respectively, and then charge the vehicle with electromagnetic induction. The latter also requires a transmitter panel and an on-board receiving panel to charge the battery of the electric vehicle by resonance.

From the above principle, it is mainly divided into static and dynamic wireless charging. As the name suggests, the former is that the vehicle can be charged in a static state and the latter one is that the vehicle can be charged during driving. Dynamic wireless is what should be exactly developed in the future. With dynamic wireless charging, EV owners do not need to carry more batteries as they can charge the car while driving.

The Advantages of Wireless EV Charging

It’s hands-free. No intervention is necessary by a human. You do not need to carry heavy charging cables or plug your car in at DC fast charging. You can simply park the vehicle over the car-charging pad and charging starts automatically, the parameters of which can be scheduled and controlled via a smartphone app.

It’s safer. At very high power levels, it is safer for humans not to handle charging equipment and lower possibility of human error and accident risk.

The connections are protected. Because the connections are enclosed, there can be no oxidation or degradation of electronics, electrical connections, or contacts. There is also no physical connector that can wear out, especially with frequent, intermittent charging. There is no cable, socket, or connector that can be subject to wear and tear.

Dynamic charging will be possible. If dynamic wireless charging mode is equipped roadway, it can greatly reduce the amount of battery power carried by electric vehicles, reduce the cost of the vehicle, and completely solve the user’s driving range anxiety.

Challenges and Drawbacks of Wireless EV Charging

While the idea behind wireless charging may be an exciting opportunity to explore, it is more likely to be a novelty at best.

  • High cost: The biggest problem in promoting wireless charging technology is the cost. Data shows that the cost of wireless charging roads can be as high as USD150 million yuan per kilometer. lots of money will have to be invested in the early stage, and high maintenance costs for the investment should also be considered in the later stage.
  • High Inefficiencies: Compared with wired high-power output charging stations, wireless charging power is still low which is not more than 60kW/h with current technology, and there is a certain energy loss in the transmission process. Considering that a large proportion of electricity is generated from fossil fuels, this inefficiency would increase CO2 production.
  • No Standards uniformed: There is no universal standard for wireless charging for the moment. The high cost investment in the early stage means that there needs to be a large number of users to use it in the future, otherwise, there is no point of investment. This will also require the government to take the lead and coordinate with various enterprises to jointly develop universal industry standards and also unify various interfaces.
  • While a wireless charger in a parking lot or garage is somewhat plausible, it is unlikely to ever work on main roads. Such a charger would need to be embedded into the road instead of raised; otherwise, it would effectively behave as a speed bump. 
  • The process of wireless charging will produce huge energy loss and a lot of heat (the same as the wired charging stations). With the increase of power, more heat will be released that has become a major technical difficulty in improving the wireless charging power. Well, the greater the power, the hotter it is.
  • Sensitive topic for human health: wireless charging is the mutual conversion of magnetic and electric fields, this process will produce a lot of electromagnetic radiation, which is a sensitive topic for human health.

As long as the challenge of costs can be solved and the higher charging output power development can be achieved, dynamic wireless charging will bring a new image of infrastructure construction around the world that will greatly help EV owners to alleviating the anxiety of insufficient range and long charging time.
